New York State Fair unveils stunning butter sculpture

By Blake Jackson

The 2024 New York State Fair has unveiled its annual butter sculpture, delivering a powerful message that extends beyond the realm of dairy products.

This year's sculpture, crafted by renowned artists Jim Victor and Marie Pelton from Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, emphasizes the theme "Dairy: Good for you. Good for the planet."

The artwork depicts a family enjoying a moment by a riverbank on one side, while on the other, a man and a child are seen planting a tree on a farm, also bordered by a river.

The intricate sculpture was brought to life over 11 days, using more than 800 pounds of butter sourced from New York.

According to the event organizers, the sculpture is designed to highlight the critical role dairy farmers play in environmental stewardship.

Mike McMahon of E-Z Acres Dairy Farm in Homer shared his own farm's commitment to sustainability, noting, "On our farm alone, we have planted thousands of willow trees along the eight miles of streams that run through our property. We invest heavily in practices like these to create a healthy environment for our neighbors, our family, and our cows."

Visitors to the fair can view the butter sculpture in the Dairy Products Building, with the event running from August 21 to September 2.
