Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a landmark set of initiatives under New York’s FY 2026 Enacted Budget, committing over $1 billion to sustainability efforts and significant funding to support the agriculture sector, environment, and public spaces.
At the core of the plan is the Sustainable Future Program, the largest climate-focused investment in New York history. It includes $450 million to cut building emissions, $250 million for electric transportation, and $200 million for clean energy expansion.
To promote healthy living and outdoor activity, the state is investing over $200 million into the Unplug & Play initiative through programs like NYSWIMS, NYBRICKS, and NYPLAYS, funding swimming pools, community centers, and playgrounds.
The Environmental Protection Fund receives $425 million to preserve land, protect water, reduce emissions, and support local parks. A $500 million clean water infrastructure fund and a $1.25 billion Superfund program were also included to address hazardous waste and drinking water needs.
Agriculture plays a key role in this budget. Over $90 million supports agricultural stewardship programs, helping farmers adopt climate-resilient practices. An additional $20 million is set aside to expand affordable farmworker housing with increased loan flexibility.
New York’s dairy sector benefits from a second round of $10 million in Dairy Modernization grants, and $5 million is dedicated to meat processing expansion. The budget also supports school food programs, 4-H education, and on-farm safety.
“We have secured a record $1 billion to build a greener, more sustainable New York,” said Governor Hochul, “while maintaining our longstanding commitment to New York farmers.”
More than $60 million in assistance will go to local producers through programs focused on research, education, and marketing.
