New York Governor Kathy Hochul proudly declared a major milestone for South Fork Wind, the state's inaugural offshore wind farm, as the project achieved its "steel in the water" achievement with the installation of its first monopile foundation. This accomplishment paves the way for the imminent installation of the project's U.S.-manufactured offshore substation.
As the first utility-scale offshore wind farm to be completed in federal waters in the United States, South Fork Wind remains on schedule to commence operations by the end of this year. The project's successful implementation supports the ambitious target set by the New York Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, aiming to develop 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind energy by 2035.
Originally approved by the Long Island Power Authority in 2017, South Fork Wind was selected through a 2015 request for proposals to address the increasing energy demands of Long Island's east end. With the installation of the monopile foundation complete, the project now enters the crucial wind turbine installation phase, marking the final construction stage of the 12-turbine, 130-megawatt endeavor.
South Fork Wind commenced its journey in February 2022, initially focusing on the onshore export cable system. As part of New York State's extensive offshore wind development efforts, South Fork Wind is one of five active projects, comprising the largest portfolio of its kind in the nation. Collectively, these projects represent a combined capacity of over 4,300 megawatts, solidifying New York's commitment to clean and renewable energy sources.
Tom Falcone, CEO of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), expressed his pride in reaching this significant project milestone, highlighting LIPA's dedication to fostering a sustainable and resilient future for its customers. He emphasized that the realization of South Fork Wind symbolizes the transformation of long-held visions into tangible reality. LIPA remains dedicated to leading the way and pioneering innovative solutions that will shape a sustainable future for Long Island and the Rockaways.
The South Fork Wind project stands as a testament to New York's determination to harness the power of offshore wind, accelerating the state's clean energy journey and setting an inspiring example for others to follow.
