NY EPR legislation stalled, farmers concerned

NY EPR legislation stalled, farmers concerned

By Blake Jackson

New York State is considering an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program for packaging. EPR would require producers to deal with trash created from packaging, rather than municipalities.

Environmental advocates support EPR, but some groups, including the New York Farm Bureau, are concerned about the cost. The farm bureau believes that EPR would be too costly for agricultural producers, such as dairy farms and food and beverage processors. They also have concerns about restrictions on some plastic packaging that is required for food safety.

The state legislature is scheduled to return to session in January, and it is unclear if EPR legislation will be passed this year.
