NYS Sweet Corn, Peach, Pear Harvests Progressing Well



According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in New York, there were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.

Topsoil moisture supplies were 22 percent very short, 40 percent short, 36 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 17 percent very short, 36 percent short, 47 percent adequate, and 0 percent surplus.

Barley harvested for grain has reached 63 percent, nearly twice as much as last year's 34 percent and the five-year average of 33 percent. The oats harvest was 23 percent complete, ahead of last year's 14 percent and the five-year average of 11 percent. The winter wheat harvest advanced to 92 percent, ahead of last year and the five-year average.

Third-cutting of hay was 17 percent complete this past week.

The cabbage harvest advanced to 17 percent, ahead of last year's 5 percent and the five-year average of 12 percent. Snap beans harvested was 6 percent complete. Forty percent of the state's sweet corn has been harvested, well ahead of last year's 17 percent and the five-year average of 15 percent.

Harvest of New York peaches was 20 percent complete, while the pear harvest was also 20 percent complete. The tart cherry harvest was 92 percent, equal with last year.
