NY farm bureau pushes budget support for agriculture
New York Ag Connection - 02/12/2024

New York Farm Bureau recently urged the state legislature to prioritize critical programs supporting the diverse agricultural landscape. Their public policy director highlighted the ongoing challenges farmers face, but also emphasized the industry's immense potential.

While acknowledging the Governor's proposed budget investments, the Bureau advocated for further support in key areas:

Promotional and research programs: Vegetables, fruits, maple, turfgrass, hops, and craft beverages, alongside the Farm Viability Institute, need continued backing.

PRO-DAIRY and PRO-Livestock: These science-based programs at Cornell, crucial for navigating climate change and new technologies, require continued funding.

Environmental Protection Fund: Sustaining programs like Farmland Protection and Soil and Water Conservation Districts is essential for environmental stewardship.

Nourish-NY and Healthy School Meals for All: Expanding market access for farmers and providing healthy food options are priorities.

Cornell Farm Labor Specialist program: This program's one-on-one assistance for farmers improves efficiency and working conditions.

Refundable investment tax credit: Expanding this credit to include farm housing construction and rehabilitation would enhance farmworker quality of life.

The Farm Bureau's message emphasizes the importance of continued investment in agriculture, fostering a thriving and sustainable industry that benefits both farmers and consumers across New York.
