Meet New York top conservationist farms

By Blake Jackson

New York State has recognized the exceptional conservation efforts of three farm families by naming them finalists for the AEM-Leopold Conservation Award.

Humbert Farms, Sunnyside Farms, and Ben Wever Farm embody the state’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.

These farms, located in Wayne, Cayuga, and Essex counties respectively, have implemented innovative practices that protect soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitat.

“New York State is a leader in the fight against climate change nationwide, and our farmers play a key role in meeting our climate goals while protecting our land and water and producing fresh, nutritious New York foods. The three finalists selected for this year’s AEM-Leopold Conservation Award exemplify the best of what we see across our state as they lead the way in implementing conservation practices on their farms and in their communities. I congratulate our finalists and thank them for inspiring others in the agricultural community in New York to follow their lead.” said Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball.

By prioritizing conservation, these farmers are not only safeguarding the environment but also ensuring the long-term viability of their operations.

Their dedication to sustainable agriculture aligns with New York's broader climate goals and serves as an inspiration to other farmers across the state.

The AEM-Leopold Conservation Award, a joint initiative of New York State and the Sand County Foundation, celebrates farmers who balance agricultural production with environmental responsibility.

The award honors the legacy of Aldo Leopold, a renowned conservationist who advocated for an ethical relationship between humans and the land.

As the finalists for this prestigious award, Humbert Farms, Sunnyside Farms, and Ben Wever Farm exemplify the power of agricultural stewardship. Their achievements highlight the positive impact that farmers can have on the environment while maintaining profitable businesses.

The winner of the $10,000 award will be announced later this summer, culminating in a celebration of these outstanding conservationists.
