NEW YORK STATE WEATHER

NY egg production dips but stays strong

NY egg production dips but stays strong

By Blake Jackson

In June 2024, New York egg production totaled 134.9 million eggs, marking a 5 percent decrease from the previous year.

This decline is reflected in the overall reduction in the state's number of layers, which averaged 5.62 million, down by 2 percent compared to June 2023. Additionally, the production per 100 layers fell to 2,400 eggs, a 4 percent drop from the same month last year.

Despite the drop in production, New York remains a significant player in the northeastern egg market. The state's total egg production for June 2024 was lower than the 142.3 million eggs produced in June 2023.

The reduction in egg production aligns with broader regional trends, although New York’s figures still contribute substantially to the national totals.

In terms of layers, New York's number of table egg layers in flocks of 30,000 or more slightly decreased to 5.12 million in June 2024, down from 5.13 million in 2023.

This minor reduction in layers reflects the overall decline in egg production. The average number of eggs produced per 100 layers also saw a decrease, indicative of a slight drop in productivity.

Overall, New York’s egg production sector is navigating a period of decreased output. However, the state's steady number of layers and production per layer highlight its ongoing role in the regional and national egg markets.
