The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball, in collaboration with Cornell University, has announced the launch of the Community Garden Leadership Certificate Program.
This year-long online program aims to equip existing community garden leaders with essential skills such as community engagement, fundraising, volunteer management, and more.
The program is funded by the State's Urban Farms and Community Gardens program and is offered at no cost to participants.
Commissioner Ball said, “Community gardens are unique, valuable spaces that not only help provide accessible sources of fresh, local food, but also provide a space for residents to develop a personal relationship with agriculture while also connecting with their community. Our new Community Garden Leadership Certificate Program offers a great opportunity for our community garden leaders across the state – who are already doing exceptional, essential work – to hone their craft and gain new skills to help them lead robust, resilient community growing spaces."
Developed in collaboration with the New York State Community Gardens Task Force, the Community Garden Leadership Program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to elevate current leaders.
Through online modules and opportunities for community engagement, participants will gain the tools necessary to build strong, sustainable community gardens.
The program covers a wide range of topics, including community engagement, fundraising, succession planning, leadership team building, volunteer management, local policy navigation, and more.
Participants will have the opportunity to connect with subject-matter experts and Cornell faculty to foster a supportive learning experience. Upon completion, leaders will be well-prepared to champion their organizations and strengthen the overall capacity of the community garden sector.
Program applications are now being accepted until October 1, 2024. Up to 15 community garden leaders from across New York State will be selected for the inaugural cohort.
