China Leads Global Ammonia Supply

China Leads Global Ammonia Supply

By Jamie Martin

China’s role in global ammonia production remains strong, backed by high demand from agriculture and its industrial complex. As the largest consumer of nitrogen-based fertilizers, the country relies on ammonia to make products like urea and ammonium phosphate, essential for crop yields and food security.

GlobalData’s recent report, “Global Ammonia Market: Key Projects and Capacity Additions, 2026,” highlights that China is set to produce nearly one-third of the world’s ammonia by 2030. Continued demand for fertilizers, particularly amid limited productive farmland, ensures China’s ammonia consumption will remain high throughout the decade.

Ammonia also plays a crucial role in China’s industrial sector. It is a key ingredient in chemicals like nitric acid, which is used in plastics, dyes, and other industrial products. Additionally, ammonia is used in pollution-control systems to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions at factories and power plants.

China’s large manufacturing base—including steel, electronics, textiles, and construction depends on consistent chemical supplies. Maintaining high ammonia production ensures these sectors continue operating efficiently.

“As the world’s largest consumer of nitrogen fertilizers, China relies heavily on ammonia as the key building block for products such as urea and ammonium phosphate, which support crop yields and national food security. With rising pressure to maintain stable harvests amid limited arable land in the country, demand for ammonia-based fertilizers is expected to remain robust through the end of the decade,” said Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData.
