Farm Ops Offers Livestock Fencing Workshop

Farm Ops Offers Livestock Fencing Workshop

By Blake Jackson

Farmers and aspiring agriculturalists are invited to join Farm Ops for an interactive, in-person workshop focused on livestock fencing.

This hands-on event will take place at Turrell Farms in West Oneonta, NY, and is ideal for both beginners and those looking to sharpen their skills.

The workshop will be led by Farmer Veterans James Turrell and Nina Saeli, along with Ashley McFarland, Area Livestock Specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Central New York Dairy, Livestock & Field Crops.

The day begins with a morning session dedicated to temporary fencing. Participants will learn how to install two types of temporary fences designed for pastured pigs—techniques that can also be adapted for other livestock types.

A midday break will include a lunch of pizza, salad, and seltzer water. Attendees are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle for convenience.

The afternoon session will shift focus to permanent fencing, specifically how to construct a fence corner—a vital structure for tension-bearing support.

Participants will gain experience with stretching and securing fencing wire, learning skills that can be used on any livestock farm.

Please note, this event will not cover deer-exclusion fencing.

Veterans and active-duty military personnel can register for free. Others are welcome to join by registering through the event’s official page.

“This workshop is a great way to gain practical skills, build confidence, and connect with fellow farmers in a supportive setting,” said organizers.

Farm Ops continues to support new and existing farmers by offering real-world training in agricultural best practices. Don't miss this opportunity to learn essential fencing techniques from experienced farmers and specialists.
