Governor Kathy Hochul announced funding for 20 transformative projects in Central New York under the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) and NY Forward programs.
These projects are set to rejuvenate downtown areas, promote tourism, and expand housing options in Aurora, Cayuga, Union Springs, Canastota, and Brewerton.
The Aurora, Cayuga, and Union Springs area, winner of a $10 million DRI award, will receive support for nine projects totaling nearly $9.7 million.
These include the redevelopment of Beacon Bay Marina, improvements to Frontenac Park, the transformation of McIntosh Park, and the construction of a mixed-use building on Cayuga Street. The projects focus on creating walkable community spaces, new housing, and enhancing waterfront access.
Canastota, awarded $4.5 million through NY Forward, will benefit from seven projects, including the development of a mixed-use pocket neighborhood along the Erie Canal, the conversion of historic buildings into a farm craft brewery and community gathering spaces, and upgrades to parks and firehouse facilities. These projects emphasize revitalizing historic assets while promoting economic growth.
In Brewerton, four NY Forward projects funded at $4.5 million will develop mixed-use residential and retail spaces, enhance waterfront recreation at Lighthouse Park, build apartment buildings, and renovate the local library. These initiatives aim to attract residents and visitors while supporting future private sector investment.
Governor Hochul said, “Central New York is at the forefront of the economic resurgence sweeping across our state, and I’m investing in 20 projects that will transform our towns and villages, and strengthen the communities around them.”
State leaders praised the programs for fostering economic growth and community vitality. The initiatives are part of New York’s larger strategy to create compact, walkable downtowns and promote sustainable regional economies.
Strategic Implementation Plans developed by local committees guided project selection to ensure each initiative supports long-term revitalization goals.
Through nine rounds, the DRI has awarded $900 million to 91 communities statewide. NY Forward complements this effort by targeting smaller and rural downtowns, awarding $300 million to 60 communities over three rounds.
These investments mark a significant step toward creating vibrant, livable communities across Central New York for generations to come.
