Farm to virtual reality - NY educates with immersive view

By Blake Jackson

Bridging the gap between rural and urban communities, New York Farm Bureau launched a virtual reality (VR) video series showcasing the realities of life on a farm. This immersive experience aims to educate policymakers, government officials, and consumers about the vital role agricultural labor plays in getting food from farm to table.

Featuring diverse farmers across the state, the VR series delves into their daily routines, highlighting the challenges they face in securing and retaining a skilled workforce. By experiencing these firsthand through VR technology, viewers gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of modern agriculture and the critical role of agricultural workers.

The project's success stemmed from strategic outreach. New York Farm Bureau utilized the VR videos during legislative meetings, government agency briefings, and consumer events, effectively reaching key audiences. Additionally, screenings were held at county Farm Bureau events and the organization's legislative reception, further amplifying the message.

Funding for this innovative project came from the American Farm Bureau Federation's (AFBF) Strategic Action Fund, which supports public policy initiatives in smaller state Farm Bureaus. Several other state Farm Bureaus, including Idaho, Iowa, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas, contributed to the fund, demonstrating their commitment to collaborative efforts that benefit the entire agricultural community.

This VR initiative by New York Farm Bureau serves as a powerful example of using technology to bridge the gap between producers and consumers, fostering a deeper appreciation for the complex and essential world of agriculture.
