NEW YORK STATE WEATHER

Governor Hochul urges vigilance amidst storms

Governor Hochul urges vigilance amidst storms

By Blake Jackson

Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a warning to all New Yorkers to brace themselves for severe weather conditions expected to hit the state. With a prolonged storm forecasted to bring heavy rain and strong winds, residents in various regions, including Western New York, the Southern Tier, the Mid-Hudson Region, and New York City and Long Island, are advised to be vigilant.

The governor emphasized the importance of monitoring local weather forecasts and taking necessary precautions to ensure safety, as the anticipated weather could lead to hazardous travel conditions, flooding, and power outages.

Projections indicate that areas across the state could receive an additional 2-3 inches of rain, with some regions experiencing higher rainfall rates of over half an inch per hour, particularly during the evening and early night hours. Coastal regions are particularly at risk of flooding, including waterfront areas, shorelines, and low-lying regions near tidal rivers and bays.

Downstate areas are expected to face strong winds ranging from 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph. These winds have the potential to topple trees and power lines, posing a significant risk of widespread power outages. Travel advisories have been issued, especially for high-profile vehicles, urging caution on the roads.

Flood watches are in effect for Western NY and the Southern Tier, with potential rainfall totals of up to three inches before transitioning to snow or a wintry mix. Coastal flood warnings and advisories have been issued for New York City, Long Island, and southern Westchester County, highlighting the risk of inundation in vulnerable areas near the waterfront during high tide cycles.

Additionally, a flood advisory has been issued for coastal flooding along the Hudson in certain counties, while a high wind warning is in place for the Mid-Hudson, New York City, and Long Island regions until Thursday morning.

Residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates, heed warnings from local authorities, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being during the anticipated severe weather conditions.
