New Laws Support New York Farmers and Future Generations

By Blake Jackson

The New York State Senate has approved a series of legislative measures aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector and providing long-term support to farmers and rural communities across the state.

This new legislation not only offers critical support to existing farmers but also lays a foundation for the next generation by equipping aspiring farmers with vital tools and resources to sustain farming for years to come.

Among the key initiatives included in the legislative package are the creation of a youth education program to expose students to hands-on agricultural experiences, the establishment of a farm succession planning program to assist with the transfer of farm ownership, and the expansion of regional farmers’ markets.

Other provisions include the introduction of carbon farming tax credits and an expansion of eligibility for property tax exemptions related to farm structures.

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said, “The Senate Majority is deeply invested in supporting our state’s farmers while simultaneously finding ways to create more opportunities for future generations to enter into the agricultural industry and help ensure our state’s food security. Across every part of New York State, agriculture significantly shapes our lives, health, economies and communities. I want to thank Senator Michelle Hinchey, Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and the bill sponsors for their dedicated work and continuing to connect our state’s communities with their agriculture roots.”

Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Michelle Hinchey said, “Agriculture is one of New York’s greatest strengths, and by protecting local farms, we protect our food supply and support a foundational aspect of our statewide economy."

This legislative package reflects a unified commitment to advancing food security, climate resilience, and economic vitality in New York.
