New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced $5 million in funding for animal shelters and humane societies across the state. This is the sixth round of funding for the Companion Animal Capital Fund, a state-funded program that provides grants for capital improvement projects at animal shelters.
The funding will be used to renovate dog kennels, improve medical facilities, and construct more efficient shelters. It will also be used to build, renovate, or acquire buildings and equipment needed to house, treat, and care for sheltered dogs and cats.
"New York State's Companion Animal Capital Fund has made a real difference to shelters across the state and the animals in their care," said Governor Hochul. "I'm proud that the funding announced today will continue to build on the great work of this program, helping New York's animals stay happy and healthy as they await their forever homes."
Since the program's launch in 2017, the state has dedicated over $33 million to the Companion Animal Capital Fund. In total, 84 projects have been awarded across New York.
The program is administered by the Department of Agriculture and Markets (AGM). Grants are awarded based on a need assessment, detailed project description, and reasonableness of cost.
Two Requests for Proposals (RFPs) have been released for Round 6 of the program:
RFP 0311: This RFP provides over $3.5 million for municipal and incorporated not-for-profit pounds, shelters, humane societies, and rescue facilities.
RFP 0312: This RFP provides over $1.1 million for duly incorporated pounds, shelters, humane societies, or rescue facilities that are not operated by or under contract with a municipality.
Applications are due by 4:00 pm on January 29, 2024.
