USDA Launches New Hogs and Pigs Survey

USDA Launches New Hogs and Pigs Survey

By Jamie Martin

The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is preparing to conduct its quarterly Hogs and Pigs Survey, which plays a key role in monitoring the U.S. pork industry.

The survey will ask farmers for information about hog and breeding stock inventories, farrowing plans, and pig crops. This data provides reliable insights into production levels and helps identify industry trends over time.

Survey questionnaires will be distributed to producers in late August. Farmers can respond through the Internet, by mail, or by fax. Those who do not reply will be contacted by phone or visited for a personal interview.

“Through the quarterly surveys, NASS measures and reports conditions and trends in the U.S. pork industry over the course of the year,” said NASS Livestock Branch Chief Travis Averill. “The quarterly hog surveys enable NASS to provide pork producers, analysts, agribusinesses, and others, the data they need to make sound and timely business decisions.”

Around 4,500 producers nationwide will be surveyed. NASS ensures that all responses remain confidential. Federal law protects the privacy of participants, and results are only published in combined form to avoid identifying individual operations.

The findings will be published in the official Hogs and Pigs Report on September 25, 2025. All results, along with other agricultural reports, will be available online at nass.usda.gov for public access. Farmers, agribusinesses, and researchers can use these reports to guide their business and policy decisions.
