New York's farmers benefited from 3.5 favorable field work days last week, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Moisture levels remained positive, with topsoil showing 74% adequate and subsoil at 77% adequate.
Apple development is progressing at a steady pace, with green fruit reaching 43% emergence compared to the five-year average of 37%. Barley planting reached 14%, slightly behind the usual pace but on par with last year. Spring tillage activities are at 20% completion, lagging the historical average of 36% for this date.
Oat planting shows good progress at 21%, exceeding last year's numbers. Onion planting is underway but remains below the five-year average. Winter wheat has seen minimal heading yet, which is typical for this time of year.
On a positive note, crop conditions across the state are favorable. Hay, both alfalfa and other varieties, show a dominant good-to-excellent rating, indicating healthy growth. Winter wheat also maintains a promising outlook with over 70% of the crop rated good or excellent.
