New York state recognizes farm safety efforts

New York State officials recently gathered to recognize efforts to improve farm safety statewide. The event took place during National Farm Health and Safety Week, an annual tradition that highlights safety and workplace conditions on farms.

One of the efforts that was highlighted was the investment in safety programming over the last year, made possible in part by Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, chair of the Assembly Agriculture Committee. While a 2021 study suggests a decline in agricultural-related fatalities, officials emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant to ensure that the decline is not a brief trend.

“Agriculture is more than just a multi-billion-dollar industry,” said New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon. “It nourishes every single household in New York State. Ensuring health and safety on farms remains one of our top priorities, and we thank our many agricultural partners for helping us protect the workers in this vital industry.”

Specific programs that were highlighted include the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health, which provides bilingual programming to improve safety, and the work done by the Cornell Cooperative Extension.

The New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health is a statewide program that provides education and training on agricultural health and safety to farmers, farm workers, and other agricultural stakeholders. The program offers a variety of resources, including bilingual training materials, online courses, and in-person workshops.

The Cornell Cooperative Extension is a network of local offices that provide educational and technical assistance to farmers and other agricultural businesses. The Cooperative Extension offers a variety of programs on farm safety, including tractor safety, grain bin safety, and livestock handling safety.

The recognition of farm safety efforts by New York State officials is a positive step towards ensuring the safety of farm workers and the sustainability of the agricultural industry.
