New York wine industry releases 2024 vineyard report

By Blake Jackson

The New York Wine & Grape Foundation (NYWGF) has released the 2024 New York Vineyard Report, marking the beginning of a two-year initiative to accurately assess vineyard acreage across the state.

This comprehensive report, which includes data on bearing acreage, grape varieties, and origin, is crucial for understanding the current state of New York's wine industry.

“As an industry we stand at a crossroads, understanding that accurate and timely data is not just beneficial it’s essential,” said Sam Filler, Executive Director of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation.

“Accurate data is critical for deepening our understanding of regional strengths, and consumer demands, and will help guide research funding and promotional strategies. We thank our funding partners and New York’s grape growers for investing in our future by prioritizing support for this survey process that will empower our industry to thrive in a dynamic market.”

The report was made possible through a collaborative effort involving Agency 29, Ag Access, and Deep Planet LLC. Advanced machine learning technology was utilized to analyze vineyard data, providing a more precise assessment.

"Agriculture is an industry that not only thrives on evolution, innovation, and adaptability, but also depends on these critical skills to drive us forward," said Richard A. Ball, New York State Agriculture Commissioner.

"We must keep our eyes open to what works, and examining accurate data about crop health, growth trends, and consumer demand is paramount to keeping up with our ever-changing world. I thank our partners for spearheading this initiative and look forward to seeing the insight this research brings to our industry.”

In 2025, the survey will expand to include pricing information, non-bearing acreage, and production tonnage.

Growers will be able to easily update their vineyard information through an online portal powered by Deep Planet technology.

The NYWGF acknowledges the support of the Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority and the New York State Department of Agriculture in making this report possible.

The organization also thanks the grape growers and the Technical Advisory Committee for their valuable contributions.
