NOFA-NY champions a sustainable and accessible local food system in New York, connecting farmers, gardeners, and consumers since 1983. They promote organic practices, land stewardship, and local marketing through education, certification, and advocacy.
Pioneering organic certification in the state, NOFA-NY now offers separate education and certification services, remaining a leading force in sustainable agriculture. As a farmer-governed non-profit, they collaborate with other Northeast states under the Northeast Organic Farming Association umbrella.
Advocacy is key. NOFA-NY champions policies supporting sustainable and organic agriculture through member-driven resolutions presented to lawmakers. Their team actively engages with officials to ensure farmer needs are heard.
Beyond certification and advocacy, NOFA-NY provides valuable resources for farmers:
- Transitioning to Organic: Partnering with the USDA, they offer mentorship, resources, and events to support farmers adopting organic practices.
- Climate-Smart Farming: Helping farms adapt to climate change through technical and financial support, promoting resilient practices.
- Farmer Helpline: Offering expert guidance on certification, production, and pest management.
- Farm Share Program: Connecting low-income families with affordable CSA shares, ensuring fair compensation for farmers while expanding access to fresh local food.
- Information Hub: Their website, newsletter, and social media provide farmers with a wealth of resources on grants, education, soil health, marketing, and production.
NOFA-NY's dedication extends beyond its borders, collaborating with other states and working towards a shared vision of a thriving, sustainable food system for all.
