Rooted in Grains Rooted in Community

By Blake Jackson

On May 15, the Foodshed Alliance partnered with American Farmland Trust NY/NJ for its Annual Spring Council Meeting, hosted at the historic Marksboro Mills in Warren County, NJ. This event brought together farmers, millers, nonprofit leaders, and entrepreneurs from across New York and New Jersey to support the growing local grains movement and promote regenerative farming practices.

The day began with a 100% local breakfast, cheeses from Bobolink Dairy, baked goods made from River Valley Community Grains flours, and coffee and tea from Campagna Coffee. Participants shared not just a meal but a sense of purpose.

A powerful panel discussion followed, featuring leaders like Kendrya Close of Foodshed Alliance, Larry Mahmarian from River Valley Community Grains, Ruthie Perretti of Marksboro Mills, and organic farmers Klaas Martens and Scott Morgan. The discussion was led by moderator Elizabeth Dyck of OGRIN. Together, they addressed three main topics: opportunities for small grain growers, ways to foster connections in the regional grain space, and how to grow markets for local grains.

The afternoon included guided tours of nearby grain fields and milling operations, giving participants a closer look at sustainable practices in action. Attendees saw firsthand the tools, techniques, and community effort needed to restore the regional grain economy.

Key messages from the event focused on farmland protection, regenerative agriculture, and the importance of state policy in supporting farmers. Speakers stressed that building a resilient food system takes collaboration, innovation, and dedication from all sectors—farmers, processors, millers, bakers, and advocates.

This meeting marked the beginning of a stronger network for grain growers in the region. The shared goal is clear: ensure that local farms thrive and that sustainable, healthy food systems continue to grow from the ground up.
