Unadilla Community Farm has been honored by New York Soil Health (NYSH) for its exceptional dedication to sustainable farming and soil health.
Recognized as a Soil Health Champion, the farm stands out for its innovative approach to regenerative agriculture and consistent efforts to monitor and improve soil conditions.
Located in New York, Unadilla Community Farm focuses on building soil health and increasing carbon levels using regenerative agroforestry techniques.
Their diversified farming system blends annual vegetables with perennial fruit and nut trees, mushrooms, and herbs.
The farm operates on a human-scale model, emphasizing no-till practices, heavy mulching, crop rotation, and the use of cover crops to maintain soil vitality.
NYSH applauds the farm for meeting the benchmarks set by Cornell University’s Soil Health Program. These benchmarks serve as a tool for farmers to assess their soil health, with the 75th percentile representing strong performance and the 90th percentile highlighting aspirational goals within different production systems.
These percentile-based targets, made available through open-access publications, offer practical guidance for farmers looking to improve their practices.
Unadilla Community Farm’s achievement showcases the value of sustainable farming methods and serves as a model for others striving to enhance soil health across New York and beyond.
