The United States Department of Agriculture has announced a major financial assistance program for specialty crop growers, including grape producers in New York. The program, known as the Assistance for Specialty Crop Farmers, provides a total of $1.625 billion to help growers manage economic challenges caused by unstable market conditions.
Under this program, grape growers are eligible for financial support based on their 2025 planted acreage. Both fresh and processed grapes qualify, making the program beneficial for a wide range of producers. Fresh grapes fall under Tier 1 and are eligible for payments of $650 per acre, while processed grapes fall under Tier 2 with payments of $225 per acre. However, the total payment for an individual producer is limited to $250,000.
Only eligible acres will be considered for payments. Fields used for purposes such as grazing, forage, silage, or experimental crops are not included in the payment calculation. This ensures that assistance is directed toward active crop production.
To qualify, applicants must be United States citizens or resident aliens. They must also have reported their 2025 crop acreage by April 24, 2026. Producers who meet these requirements can apply simple and accessible methods.
Important Dates:
- June 1, 2026: Online application opens through Login.gov
- June 8, 2026: Applications begin at local FSA offices
- August 7, 2026: Final date to submit applications
Pre-filled applications are available for producers who have already reported their crop acreage. Only one application is needed for all eligible specialty crops across the country.
Producers can apply online through the official website at https://landmark.usda.gov/ascf or create an account at https://farmers.gov/account. They can also visit their local Farm Service Agency office to complete the application process in person or submit it through email or fax.
This program aims to provide timely support and help grape growers continue production despite financial challenges. It highlights the importance of government assistance in maintaining stability in the agriculture sector and supporting long-term growth.
