Young farmers confront climate change in NY
New York Ag Connection - 11/20/2023

A recent survey by Bayer found that 71% of farmers have been affected by climate change. Drier conditions are becoming more common in the Southeast, and the problem of drying land is increasing in New York and other Northeastern states.

Farmers are using a variety of climate-resistant practices to combat climate change, such as building high tunnels and using regenerative agriculture practices. However, many farmers are not taking advantage of USDA programs that could help them deal with climate change.

One of the main barriers preventing young farmers from leading the charge on climate change is the difficulty of affording land. Federal legislation such as the Increasing Land Access, Security, and Opportunities Act and The Farmer-to-Farmer Education Act could help young farmers better deal with climate change.
