AI-Based Quality Control Transforms Vertical Farming

AI-Based Quality Control Transforms Vertical Farming

Gestalt Robotics and Berlin-based startup Stack Tech Farm have joined forces to push the boundaries of vertical farming with an AI-based quality control system. Stack Tech Farm has developed a unique mobile robot solution that revolutionizes the cultivation of plants in vertical farms. With the support of Gestalt Robotics, the company aims to take their technology to the next level.

The collaboration focuses on implementing AI-based methods to precisely monitor plant growth, ensuring reliable and cost-effective quality control from seed to harvest. By using a camera system and autonomous robots, the condition and quality of the plants will be assessed at a single station. The expertise of Gestalt Robotics will play a crucial role in bringing this vision to life.

Unlike traditional vertical farming methods, Stack Tech Farm utilizes mobile robots to flexibly move trays of plants. These trays are stacked closely together, forming a grid that maximizes space utilization. The robots autonomously handle the trays, while AI-assisted orchestration optimizes the distribution based on crop type, demand, and age. This innovative approach allows for increased production, significant labor savings, reduced infrastructure and energy requirements, and lower costs.

Vertical farming is gaining traction globally due to its potential for food security, resource efficiency, and environmental sustainability. While the concept is still in its early stages in Germany compared to other regions, the market for vertical farming is estimated to be valued at $4.16 billion worldwide in 2022. The collaboration between Gestalt Robotics and Stack Tech Farm represents a significant step forward in advancing this cutting-edge agricultural practice.
