AI Enhances Operations for Farm Supply Retailers

AI Enhances Operations for Farm Supply Retailers

By Jamie Martin

Agricultural retailers and cooperatives are embracing artificial intelligence to improve operations and remain competitive in a fast-changing landscape.

According to a CoBank report, AI adoption is helping ag retailers streamline workflows, enhance customer service, and build better supply chain systems.

AI tools are being introduced across different departments—from HR and accounting to field agronomy. These tools support efficiency, reduce human error, and offer continuity in rural areas where labour remains a challenge.

Starting with low-risk tools like AI-assisted email writing and meeting summaries can ease the transition and encourage internal acceptance.

Apps like AgPilot are designed specifically for agriculture. These allow agronomists to verbally input data while travelling, helping them manage crop recommendations and client communications more effectively. This also helps agribusinesses cover more ground with limited staff.

“AI in agriculture can be utilized in a company’s back office, front office as well as within agronomy and supply chain operations divisions,” said Jacqui Fatka of CoBank.

Fatka suggests that companies begin with small projects and choose AI partners who understand agriculture. She stresses the importance of having clear privacy guidelines when using AI that handles customer data.

The benefits of AI extend beyond day-to-day operations. As margins tighten and competition increases, AI offers farm supply retailers a chance to innovate, adapt, and maintain their role as trusted advisors to farmers. It also helps reduce the risks posed by emerging distribution models and digital competitors.

By using AI to automate repetitive tasks and improve decision-making, retailers can offer better services without raising costs. CoBank advises that the cost of testing AI tools is low and delaying adoption could lead to missed growth opportunities.

This digital shift signals a strong future for ag retailers willing to adapt with the times.
