Apply now to enhance local food access in New York

By Blake Jackson

New York State is investing $1.3 million to improve access to fresh, healthy food for low-income residents and support local agriculture. The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (AGM) and Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) are offering grants through the SNAP-Ed Food Box and Community Growers Programs.

"Here at the Department, we’re working hard to make sure that New Yorkers in all corners of our state have access to fresh, locally grown, healthy foods in their communities," said Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball. "The SNAP-Ed Food Box and Community Growers Grant Programs are helping to do just that, while supporting New York farmers and our agricultural industry at the same time. It’s been great to see the funded projects through previous rounds of this program making an impact, and I encourage all eligible groups to apply for this round.”

"The SNAP-Ed Food Box and Community Growers Grants programs can make a real difference in the lives of low-income families, making it easier for them to access fresh, affordable food in their community while better connecting New Yorkers with local farmers and growers," said OTDA Commissioner Barbara C. Guinn. "We are proud to partner with the Department of Agriculture and Markets as we know that when SNAP recipients, and other low-income households, can access healthy, nutritious, affordable food, people eat better. That means better health for all New Yorkers, while supporting local communities.”

The previous round of grants, awarded earlier this year, funded 34 projects across the state. These projects tackled food insecurity, provided nutrition education, and fostered skills for growing and preparing healthy local food.

Community Growers Grant Program

This program supports urban farming and nutrition education with grants up to $50,000 for non-profits and government entities. It aims to:

  • Support community-led gardens and non-profit farms.
  • Combat food insecurity in underserved areas.
  • Empower communities to grow and cook healthy food.

Applications are due via the Statewide Financial System by December 6th, 2024. Learn more at agriculture.ny.gov/rfa-0346-snap-ed-community-growers-grant-program.
