Cayuga CCE - boost farm profits with biocontrol nematodes

Cayuga CCE - boost farm profits with biocontrol nematodes

By Blake Jackson

Join the Cayuga County CCE Shop Meetings for a special session on the economic benefits of Persistent Biocontrol Nematodes for farms. Hosted by Mike Hunter from CCE North Country Regional Ag Team and Tony Testa from Persistent BioControl, the event explores the use of biocontrol nematodes in combatting pests like Corn Rootworm, Wireworm, Black vine weevil, and Grape rootworm in crops such as corn, wheat, hops, and grapes.

These microscopic roundworms specifically target soil-dwelling insects and are compatible with Bt-RW traits. The session covers their effectiveness, application methods, and timing, with insights from research at Musgrave Research Farm in Aurora. Notably, these nematodes can be used alone for non-Bt-RW traited corn, offering scalability, ease of application, and affordability. Taking place on January 25, 2024, from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm at Kyle Farms in Cato, NY, the event welcomes farmers to learn, discuss, and discover sources for Biocontrol Nematodes adapted to New York. The session is free, and attendees can enjoy coffee and donuts provided by Cornell Extension without the need for registration. For questions or directions, contact Ron Kuck at 315-704-8810 or rak76@cornell.edu. Bring your camp chairs and join this informative session on enhancing farm practices through biological control.
