NEW YORK STATE WEATHER

Cornell project tests rice as viable option

Cornell project tests rice as viable option

By Blake Jackson

A new project led by Cornell Cooperative Extension is exploring the potential of growing rice in New York state. This potentially lucrative crop can thrive on flood-prone land and in dry conditions, offering a valuable alternative for farmers facing increased flooding risk due to climate change.

The project involves two demonstration plots: one in a flooded rice paddy and another in dry conditions. Researchers are also developing online resources and conducting surveys to understand the feasibility and interest in rice cultivation among New York farmers.

Rice offers several potential benefits, including:

  • High profitability: New York farmers could potentially net $12,000 per acre of rice, compared to $350-$800 for corn.
  • Adaptability to flooding: Rice can thrive in flood-prone areas, providing a valuable option for farmers facing increased flood risk.
  • Environmental benefits: Rice paddies can serve as habitat for shorebirds, help retain stormwater, and mitigate fertilizer pollution.
  • New economic opportunities: Locally grown rice could lead to the development of new industries, such as sake production.

The project is still in its early stages, but initial results are promising. Rice varieties adapted to colder climates are being cultivated successfully in both flooded and dry conditions. Researchers are also working to identify suitable land for rice cultivation throughout New York state.

While some challenges remain, such as the need for specialized equipment and knowledge, the project has the potential to significantly benefit New York farmers and the environment. By providing resources and support, the project can help farmers adopt this new and potentially lucrative crop and contribute to a more sustainable agricultural future.
