New York farmers benefited from a productive week ending May 19th, 2024, with 5 days suitable for fieldwork. Moisture levels were ideal, with topsoil showing only 2% short and subsoil having just 1% short, while the majority fell under adequate or surplus categories.
Apple development is progressing steadily, with green tip (initial leaf emergence) reaching 88% and full bloom at 41%. Corn planting has begun, with 31% of fields planted and emergence at 9%. Oat planting is also underway at 60% complete, with emergence at 25%.
Several other crops are in early stages of development. Barley planting reached 48%, with emergence at a low 24%. Spring tillage, a crucial step in preparing soil for planting, is 70% complete. Vegetable planting has also seen some progress, with cabbage planting at 9% and dry onions at 28%.
Looking at crop conditions, most crops are in fair to good health. Winter wheat, a key crop for New York, leads the pack with 44% rated excellent. Pastures and rangelands are also in good shape, with 61% rated good. Barley, hay, and oats show a slightly higher percentage in the fair category, but still with a significant portion (over 50%) rated good or excellent.
Overall, New York farmers are off to a positive start to the growing season with favorable weather conditions and steady crop development.
