The New York Farm Bureau praises Governor Hochul's commitment to agriculture in her recent State of the State address, pledging to work with her and the legislature to support family farms across the state.
"We appreciate Governor Hochul's recognition of the challenges facing New York farmers, particularly climate and labor issues," said Farm Bureau President David Fisher. "Her focus on mental health services, dairy infrastructure, workforce development, and youth engagement aligns with our priorities for a thriving agricultural sector."
Fisher highlighted specific initiatives he found promising, including:
- Investment in dairy processing and milk storage: This could address the challenges faced by dairy farmers during periods of surplus milk.
- Support for agricultural workforce development: A trained, and robust workforce is crucial for the future of farming in New York.
- Increased funding for the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health: This center plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being of farmers and farm workers.
- Recognition for the growing aquaculture industry: Supporting the diversification of New York's agricultural landscape is essential for long-term sustainability.
While expressing appreciation for Hochul's focus, Fisher noted the importance of the upcoming executive budget proposal. "Full funding for existing programs in environmental conservation, research, and agricultural promotion is crucial," he emphasized. "Additionally, expanding food access programs like Nourish NY and Healthy School Meals for All will benefit both farmers and communities."
The Farm Bureau remains committed to working with Governor Hochul and the legislature to ensure that agriculture receives the support it needs to thrive. Investing in New York's farms, Fisher concluded, is an investment in the well-being of the entire state.
