From dairy to doughnuts - Indian ladder farms blooms

By Blake Jackson

Nestled near Altamont, Indian Ladder Farms stands as a testament to the Ten Eyck family's agricultural spirit, stretching back to 1916. What began as a gentleman's farm with prize-winning Guernsey cows has transformed into a thriving agritourism haven, earning the prestigious Business of the Year award at the 2024 NYS Forum.

Facing a setback when the dairy barn burned in 1949, the Ten Eycks pivoted gracefully. They transitioned to Hereford beef cattle and planted orchards, selling fruit directly from their doorstep. Peter G. Ten Eyck II, armed with a pomology degree from Cornell, returned in 1961 to further expand the orchard, embracing innovations like trellises and drip irrigation. These advancements led to impressive yields, reaching up to 1,200 bushels per acre!

Indian Ladder Farms boasts 65 acres of fruit, with 40 apple varieties taking center stage. Their agritourism ventures, operational from March to December, draw crowds from the nearby Capital District, especially during the vibrant fall apple-picking season. Visitors can savor freshly pressed cider, indulge in delectable doughnuts (over 15,000 sold on peak days!), and explore the farm's pizza garden, cidery, brewery, and nature trails. Live music, event spaces, and even guided tours, including a popular children's barn tour, add to the farm's charm.

But Indian Ladder Farms is more than just a bustling agritourism destination. Their commitment to sustainability shines through their Eco Apple wholesale program, adhering to Integrated Pest Management principles and land conservation easements. This dedication extends to their community, employing 180 full- and part-time workers and earning the coveted Century Farm designation from the Ag Society.

Laura Ten Eyck, the fourth generation to grace the farm, proudly accepted the Business of the Year trophy alongside her husband, Dietrich Gehring, and business partner, Stuart Morris. Laura's brother, Peter G. Ten Eyck III, also contributes significantly to the farm's success. Their father, Peter Jr., while retired, beamed with pride from afar, having himself received the Distinguished Service Citation from the Ag Society in 2016.

Indian Ladder Farms stands as a testament to the Ten Eyck family's adaptability, resilience, and dedication to the land. From prize-winning cows to mouthwatering doughnuts, their journey is an inspiring tale of agricultural innovation and community spirit.
