Governor Hochul announces $5.8M grant for NY agriculture

Governor Kathy Hochul announced a significant investment in New York's agricultural industry with a $5.8 million grant program. The New York State Grown and Certified Infrastructure, Technology, Research and Development Program (NYS G&C ITRD) aims to support farms and food processors across the state.

The New York Farm Viability Institute (NYFVI) will oversee the program, allocating funds for capital projects, research and development initiatives, and educational and promotional activities.

Focus on Innovation and Sustainability

Grant opportunities prioritize innovative practices that address industry needs and consumer demands. Eligible projects must directly benefit New York agriculture and prioritize areas like:

  • Automation and labor efficiency in production
  • Enhanced distribution capacity
  • Improved processing and packaging
  • Food safety advancements
  • Environmental sustainability aligned with NYS G&C participation
  • Development of new consumer-driven food products

Funding Breakdown by Region

  • The $5.8 million will be distributed across New York's Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) regions:
  • Finger Lakes and Central New York: $1.2 million ($1 million for capital projects, $200,000 for research)
  • Long Island, New York City, and Mid-Hudson: $1.7 million ($1.5 million for capital projects, $200,000 for research)
  • Mohawk Valley, Capital Region, and North Country: $1.7 million ($1.5 million for capital projects, $200,000 for research)
  • Southern Tier and Western New York: $1.2 million ($1 million for capital projects, $200,000 for research)

The program seeks to empower farms and food businesses by:

  • Funding critical technological and infrastructural upgrades
  • Supporting the development of new products
  • Strengthening farms and food systems for long-term success

Details on application procedures and eligibility criteria will be available in the coming months on the NYFVI website. Prospective applicants can sign up for notification alerts.
