Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled a series of proposals to support New York’s agricultural industry as part of the 2025 State of the State.
These initiatives aim to empower farmers, strengthen local food systems, and foster a more resilient agricultural future for the state.
“New York’s agricultural industry is the backbone of our economy, and we will continue to invest in our farmers, our youth, and our future to make sure that New York remains a vibrant and competitive force in agriculture for generations to come,” Governor Hochul said.
“From supporting our dairy and maple producers to strengthening local food systems and expanding agricultural education in our schools, these initiatives will position New York as a leader in innovation, resilience, and opportunity.”
“New York’s farmers feed our families, drive our economies, and safeguard our natural landscapes. Put simply, an investment in agriculture is an investment in our way of life," said State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball.
"I thank Governor Hochul for her bold plan to continue moving New York agriculture forward with innovative strategies in key areas that will further our workforce development and ag education goals, strengthen our food system and sustainability efforts, and invest in critical infrastructure, marketing, and research to grow the industry. Our agricultural community has come so far over years of hard work, and I look forward to seeing it continue to accelerate and transform as we implement the Governor’s plans for the upcoming year.”
Key proposals include advancing sustainability in dairy farming, with additional funding for climate-resilient practices.
A new Food and Fiber Small-Scale Processing Grant Program will strengthen local food supply chains and enhance the state’s seafood offerings.
Governor Hochul is also increasing funding for the Farmworker Housing Program to ensure safe, affordable housing for farmworkers.
To bolster fiber production, investments will connect New York’s farmers to new buyers, including the fashion industry.
In addition, a Maple Industry Growth Strategy will support marketing and research to help New York lead the nation in maple innovation.
Efforts to protect farmland will increase investment in farmland tracking and support community land trusts.
The state will also expand agricultural education through initiatives like integrating agriculture into public-school curricula and providing resources for agriculture educators.
Finally, New York will advance injury detection technology for thoroughbred racing, supporting the $7 billion equine industry.
