Farmers and agricultural enthusiasts are invited to attend the Drinkwine Produce Twilight Meeting on Monday, September 16th, from 4-6 pm at Drinkwine Produce, located at 1512 Street Rd, Ticonderoga, NY.
This educational event will proceed rain or shine, offering valuable insights into high tunnel tomato production and integrated pest management (IPM) for sweet corn and pumpkins.
The event begins with introductions and an overview of Drinkwine Produce by Henry Drinkwine, who will share his successful practices for maintaining high tomato yields.
Attendees will learn about the critical aspects of high tunnel tomato production, including pollination techniques, irrigation strategies, and soil fertility management. These practices are essential for optimizing yields and ensuring healthy crops.
Following the tomato production discussion, CCE specialist Chuck Bornt will lead sessions on IPM for sweet corn and pumpkins.
This hands-on portion of the meeting will focus on scouting and identifying key pests and diseases that threaten these crops.
Topics covered will include herbicide options for sweet corn, insect management strategies, and effective weed control methods for cucurbit crops.
Additionally, Patricia Lavalley from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will present ongoing NRCS projects at Drinkwine Produce. She will also discuss funding opportunities for farms, focusing on irrigation systems and drainage improvements.
The event offers 1.5 DEC credits in categories 1A, 10, and 23. The cost is $10 per farm, and the location is conveniently close for Vermont attendees, being just minutes from the Ticonderoga ferry landing and the Crown Point Lake Champlain Bridge.
