The Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) is a fantastic opportunity for farmers and forest landowners in New York to take their conservation efforts to the next level. Through CSP, you can earn payments for actively managing, maintaining, and expanding conservation practices on your land, all while continuing your agricultural or forestry production.
What can you do with CSP?
Implement conservation and climate-smart practices: CSP supports a wide range of activities, including cover cropping, forest stand improvement, tree and shrub planting, and pollinator habitat creation. These practices help improve soil health, water quality, wildlife habitat, and more.
Maintain your agricultural or forest production: You can continue farming or forestry while participating in CSP. The program is designed to be compatible with your existing operations.
Adopt new technologies and techniques: CSP encourages the use of innovative tools and approaches, such as precision nutrient management, improved grazing systems, on-site carbon storage, and soil amendments. These practices can help you improve your productivity and efficiency while reducing your environmental impact.
New York's streamlined application process:
New York is now using ACT NOW for all CSP ranking pools in FY24. This means that your application could be approved and funded much faster if it meets or exceeds a minimum ranking score of 14.
How to apply:
- Contact your local NRCS Service Center: The NRCS staff can help you determine if you're eligible for CSP and guide you through the application process.
- Submit your application: All applications are competitive and are ranked based on various factors, including national, state, and local priorities.
- Get approved and funded: If your application is approved, you'll work with the NRCS to develop a conservation plan and start implementing your chosen practices.
