Live farm tours bring agriculture to students

By Blake Jackson

Students across the country are now able to experience the daily operations of a dairy farm without leaving their classrooms, thanks to live video tours hosted by an agricultural organization. These virtual tours offer a unique glimpse into the inner workings of dairy farms, showcasing facilities such as milking parlors, barns, and areas where calves are raised.

One recent live-streamed tour featured a dairy farm in New York, attracting as many as 25,000 students from over 1,000 classrooms nationwide. The tours provide an opportunity for young learners to see firsthand how dairy farming works, a rare experience due to the biosecurity and safety measures that often limit public access to farms.

Designed to cater to different age groups, the program offers separate tours for elementary school students and middle or high school students. The goal is to educate children about where their food comes from, and the processes involved in producing healthy dairy products. For many students, especially those from urban areas, this is a chance to connect with agriculture in a meaningful way.

These tours not only aim to foster a better understanding of food production but also inspire future interest in agricultural careers, addressing the industry’s ongoing need for skilled professionals.
