New York announces record funding for climate-friendly farms

By Blake Jackson

Governor Hochul announced a significant investment in New York's agricultural sector through the Climate Resilient Farming (CRF) grant program. This initiative, with $28.75 million available, aims to assist farmers in adopting sustainable practices that combat climate change.

The CRF program enters its eighth round, offering nearly double the funding compared to the previous year. It supports projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect water resources, improve soil health, and bolster farm resilience against climate impacts.

"Our farmers are environmental stewards," Governor Hochul highlighted. "The CRF program provides record funding to help them implement sustainable practices and achieve our climate goals."

The announcement took place at Providence Farm Collective, a non-profit farm recognized for its environmentally conscious practices. The farm utilizes cover crops, crop rotation, and water-saving irrigation systems. Additionally, they've permanently protected their land through an agricultural conservation easement.

Funding for CRF comes from the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) with added support this year from the USDA's Climate Smart Farms and Forests Project. Grants are awarded in various tracks, addressing livestock management, water management, soil health, and even establishing healthy forests on agricultural lands – a new initiative for 2024.

Through seven funding rounds, CRF has awarded $36 million to over 396 farms. These projects are estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking 108,000 cars off the road annually.

County Soil and Water Conservation Districts can now apply for these grants on behalf of farmers. The deadline for proposals is June 24th, 2024.

This program aligns with Governor Hochul's commitment to environmental sustainability. The Fiscal Year 2025 Budget allocates $81.8 million through the EPF for agricultural programs, including CRF. This represents a $4 million increase from the previous year.

Officials across the state recognize the importance of the CRF program. Senator Hinchey emphasized the program's role in helping farms build soil health and combat climate change. Assemblymember Lupardo commended the program for supporting farmers in developing solutions for climate challenges.

Overall, the CRF program signifies New York's dedication to supporting its agricultural sector while promoting environmentally responsible practices. By providing financial assistance, the program empowers farmers to become active participants in combating climate change while ensuring the long-term health and productivity of their land.
