New York agriculture - weekly weather report for April 21


Favorable moisture levels in New York fields

According to the latest report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service in New York, fieldwork for the week ending April 21, 2024, was limited to just three days. However, topsoil moisture levels remained favorable, with 64 percent rated as adequate and 36 percent as surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were also in good condition, with 78 percent rated as adequate and 22 percent as surplus.

In terms of crop progress, significant advancements were observed. Apples showed notable development, with the green tip stage reaching 28 percent, up from 15 percent the previous week. Pink apples also progressed, increasing to 13 percent from 5 percent.

Barley planting saw a slight increase, reaching 8 percent compared to less than 5 percent in the previous week. Similarly, oats planting increased to 11 percent from less than 5 percent.

Regarding crop conditions, alfalfa hay was reported to be in mostly fair to good condition, with only 3 percent rated as poor or very poor. Other hay types also showed favorable conditions, with the majority rated as fair to good.

Winter wheat conditions varied slightly, with 11 percent rated as poor and 29 percent rated as fair. However, a significant portion, 38 percent, was rated as good, and 22 percent as excellent, indicating overall satisfactory conditions for winter wheat crops in New York
