New York crop production update

New York crop production update

By Blake Jackson

In New York, the corn for grain sector experienced notable changes from 2023 to 2024. The area harvested decreased slightly from 600,000 acres in 2023 to 570,000 acres in 2024.

Despite the reduction in harvested area, yields are projected to improve, with the yield per acre increasing from 159.0 bushels in August 2023 to 165.0 bushels by September 2024.

This adjustment reflects a shift in production dynamics, with the total corn production estimated to be around 95,760,000 bushels in 2024, up from 95,400,000 bushels in 2023.

Soybeans for Beans

For soybeans, New York has seen a modest increase in both the area harvested and yield. The harvested area expanded from 340,000 acres in 2023 to 365,000 acres in 2024.

Yields are also projected to rise from 51.0 bushels per acre in 2023 to 53.0 bushels per acre in 2024.

This increase in productivity contributes to a projected total production of 19,345,000 bushels in 2024, compared to 17,340,000 bushels in 2023.

Tobacco

Tobacco production in New York was not estimated for 2024, as the state discontinued its estimates in this sector starting from this year.

Potatoes

For certified seed potatoes, New York reported an area of 871 acres for certification in 2024, slightly down from 900 acres in 2023.

The percentage of certified seed potatoes remains high at 97%, indicating strong standards in seed certification.

These figures underscore ongoing adjustments and improvements in New York’s agricultural landscape, reflecting both challenges and advancements in crop production.
