New York Launches Training for Community Garden Leaders

By Blake Jackson

The New York Department of Agriculture and Markets, in collaboration with Cornell University and the New York State Community Gardens Task Force, has unveiled a new initiative aimed at empowering community garden leaders throughout the state.

Announced by the Commissioner of Agriculture Richard Ball, this innovative program is designed to enhance the operational effectiveness of over 3,000 urban and community gardens across New York.

The Community Garden Leadership Program is an online certificate course that spans one year and is offered at no cost to participants, thanks to funding from the state's Urban Farms and Community Gardens Program.

The curriculum is tailored to equip leaders with essential skills in several key areas including best management practices, fundraising, budgeting, succession planning, volunteer management, and navigating local policies.

The program's development was guided by insights from Cornell University and the dedicated efforts of the New York State Community Gardens Task Force.

Richard Ball, the state Commissioner of Agriculture, expressed gratitude towards these partners and encouraged eligible community leaders to seize this educational opportunity.

Applications for the program are open until October 1, reflecting the state’s proactive approach to fostering sustainable urban agriculture and community engagement through education.

By participating in this program, leaders can expect to gain valuable knowledge that will not only enhance the operational aspects of their gardens but also strengthen the bonds within their communities through increased agricultural engagement.

This initiative represents a significant step towards supporting and sustaining urban and community gardens which are vital in providing fresh, local produce to New Yorkers, fostering a deeper connection with agriculture, and enhancing community well-being.
