New York expands local food access with $7.6 million boost

By Blake Jackson

Good news for New York farmers and families in need! Governor Hochul has announced a second round of funding for the "New York Food for New York Families" (NYFNYF) program, injecting $7.6 million into local food systems. This USDA-funded initiative builds on its successful first round, awarding grants to organizations connecting local farms and food-insecure communities.

"Strengthening our food system is crucial for a resilient future," Governor Hochul declared. "NYFNYF is doubling down on that goal by supporting farmers and bringing fresh, local food to vulnerable New Yorkers."

The program grants range from $250,000 to $2 million, empowering organizations like:

  • Not-for-profits to expand local food delivery and reach new communities.
  • Local governments purchase local food for facilities in underserved areas.
  • Food banks buy food boxes directly from farms.
  • Community centers launch food backpack programs for clients.

Eligible entities include non-profits, agricultural cooperatives, public schools, and local governments. Applications for this round require paper submissions, as the state transitions to a new system. Registration is available online.

"This is a fantastic example of state and federal collaboration to empower local farmers and fight food insecurity," said USDA Under Secretary Jenny Lester Moffitt. "The first round's impact was phenomenal, and we're excited to see Round 2 build on that success."

Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball echoed the excitement, praising NYFNYF's role in connecting farmers and families. "I'm proud of what this program has accomplished, and I encourage all eligible organizations to apply!"

Senators Schumer and Gillibrand applauded the initiative, highlighting its benefits for both farmers and families. Schumer emphasized the program's win-win situation for local food supply chains and families, while Gillibrand commended its focus on supporting underserved communities and ensuring access to healthy food.

NYFNYF is part of Governor Hochul's broader vision for a stronger, more resilient agricultural industry. Her 2024 State of the State address outlined plans for boosting dairy and agriculture, workforce development, and youth leadership in the sector.

This second round of NYFNYF funding promises to be a game-changer, connecting more New Yorkers to the bounty of their state's farms while supporting the livelihoods of local producers. It's a testament to the power of collaboration in building a more secure and sustainable food system for all.
