As New York grapples with its budget, the Farm Bureau outlines priorities and concerns for the agricultural community. While commending Governor Hochul's proposals in areas like workforce development, farm safety, and environmental protection, President David Fisher highlights specific areas needing attention.
Concerns around electrification: Fisher expresses concerns regarding the "common sense" implementation of energy policy, particularly the rapid electrification of industry. While acknowledging the importance of environmental protection, he emphasizes the need for realistic exemptions and assurances that the power grid can handle increased demand.
Fairness for craft beverage makers: Director of Public Policy Jeff Williams calls for fairness in the farm beverage industry. Currently, only wineries can directly ship products to consumers. The Farm Bureau advocates for expanding this privilege to breweries, cideries, and distilleries, leveling the playing field and supporting their growth.
Extended Producer Responsibility: The Farm Bureau also requests adjustments to Extended Producer Responsibility guidelines, arguing that current expectations might be unrealistic for the agricultural sector.
Positive outlook: Despite concerns, Fisher expresses optimism about the budget process, acknowledging positive momentum and ongoing discussions with the governor's office and legislature.
