For the week ending Sunday, August 18, 2024, the National Agricultural Statistics Service in New York reported that there were 5 days suitable for fieldwork.
Topsoil moisture was rated as 0% very short, 3% short, 77% adequate, and 20% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were equally favorable, with 0% very short, 0% short, 90% adequate, and 10% surplus.
Crop progress data for the same period reveals significant developments. The apple harvest reached 13%, a notable increase from last week's 7%, and higher than last year's 6%.
Barley harvesting for grain showed steady progress, with 71% completed, compared to 68% last week, 64% last year, and a five-year average of 60%.
Cabbage harvesting advanced to 29%, slightly up from 24% the previous week, though slightly below last years and the five-year average of 34%.
Corn development was also notable, with 91% of the crop silking, up from 84% last week and 75% last year. Corn in the dough stage reached 27%, a significant jump from last week’s 13% and above last year's 21%.
Dented corn was reported at 6%, a notable increase from less than 5% the previous year. The average height of corn was reported at 99 inches, compared to last week’s 88 inches and last year's 91 inches.
In hay production, 62% of the alfalfa crop had undergone a third cutting, up from 52% last week. Other hay saw its second cutting reach 91%, and its third cutting progress to 31%. Oat harvesting for grain hit 64%, up from last week’s 58% and above last year’s 52%.
Onion dry harvesting was at 30%, while potato harvesting was at 19%. Soybean blooming reached 82%, and pod setting was at 63%.
The sweet corn harvest was at 38%, and snap bean harvesting was at 7%. Winter wheat harvesting was nearly complete at 94%.
