New York voice of farmer garden expands

The New York Voice of the Farmer Garden is set to be even bigger and better at the 2024 Great New York State Fair. The expanded garden will feature new crops, interactive elements, guest speakers, and children's activities, offering fairgoers a deeper dive into New York's agricultural landscape.

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball emphasized the garden's role in showcasing the state's rich agricultural heritage. "We're excited that the Voice of the Farmer Garden has expanded so much in the last year alone," he said, highlighting the opportunity for visitors to connect with the agricultural community and learn about the diverse food products produced in New York.

State Fair Director Julie LaFave shared the enthusiasm, stating, "This year, our visitors will be able to connect directly with our farmers and producers with new, exciting presentations featuring guest speakers from every corner of this important industry in our state."

Partnerships with Farm Journal Foundation and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County have been instrumental in the garden's development. Tricia Beal, CEO of Farm Journal Foundation, expressed excitement about showcasing U.S. agriculture's impact and inspiring a new appreciation for the food system.

David Skeval, Executive Director of CCE Onondaga, highlighted the garden's role in educating fairgoers about local agriculture and fostering a sense of gratitude for the state's rich farming history.

Senator Michelle Hinchey and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo both praised the garden's importance in educating the public about New York's agricultural industry. They emphasized the connection between farmers and consumers and the garden's role in supporting the state's food system.

The expanded garden will feature over 35 varieties of crops, interactive elements like a shelled corn wading pool and a toddler potting bench, and informative QR codes linking to videos about New York agriculture. Additionally, a series of presentations and demonstrations will be offered throughout the fair, covering topics such as hops, school lunch programs, and egg grading.
