New York farmers experienced favorable fieldwork conditions during the week ending September 8th. Despite below-normal temperatures and rainfall, 6.8 days were suitable for agricultural activities.
Topsoil and subsoil moisture levels remained adequate, with 71% and 81% respectively rated as such.
Key crop developments included:
- Corn: 69% of corn reached the dough stage, and 33% reached the dent stage. Harvesting for silage was 6% complete.
- Hay: 85% of third-cutting alfalfa hay and 30% of fourth-cutting alfalfa hay were completed. Other hay cuttings reached 59% and 14% completion for third and fourth cuttings, respectively.
- Oats: 91% of oats were harvested for grain.
- Potatoes: 46% of potatoes were harvested.
- Soybeans: 83% of soybeans were setting pods, and 21% were dropping leaves.
- Other Crops: Harvesting progress for apples, cabbage, onions, sweet corn, and snap beans ranged from 22% to 63%.
New York farmers made significant progress in their fieldwork, taking advantage of favorable conditions to advance crop development and harvesting.
