As of October 6, 2024, the National Agricultural Statistics Service reported that New York experienced 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork.
Topsoil moisture levels were assessed, with 3% categorized as very short, 9% short, 81% adequate, and 7% in surplus. In terms of subsoil moisture, 0% was very short, 9% short, 85% adequate, and 6% surplus.
In crop progress, several key statistics highlight the state of agriculture in New York. As of this week, 63% of apples have been harvested, up from 50% last week and slightly above the five-year average of 60%.
Cabbage harvesting has also progressed, with 79% completed compared to 74% the previous week.
Corn is advancing rapidly, with 97% in the dough stage and 83% dented, while 39% is now mature. The harvest for grain is underway, with 8% already harvested.
In hay production, 71% of alfalfa has been cut for the fourth time, and 49% of the fourth cutting of other hay is complete.
Additionally, 42% of winter wheat has been planted. These figures illustrate a productive period for New York’s farmers, reflecting a positive trajectory in crop progress as the season progresses.
