New York Onion Growers - Pesticide and Expert Insights

Join CCE Orange County and ENYCHP for the annual Onion School on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Pine Island Fire House in Pine Island, New York.

This informative event will focus on a range of important topics for onion growers and is a great opportunity to hear from experts in the field.

Attendees will earn 3.0 NYSDEC pesticide applicator's credits. The session will feature several key speakers, including Christy Hoepting of the CCE Cornell Vegetable Program. She will provide a review of Bicyclopyrone weed control in onions and reflect on the first year of Optogen use in New York.

Ethan Grundberg will discuss onion tolerance to late pre-emergent herbicide applications and provide updates on seedcorn maggot, onion maggot, and onion thrips management for 2025.

Additionally, Dr. Brian Nault from Cornell's Department of Entomology will join Ethan in addressing insect pest management strategies.

Other topics include refining fungicide programs for Stemphylium leaf blight management, with insights from both Ethan Grundberg and Christy Hoepting. Dennis Van Dyk from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs will discuss the effects of different cover crops on soilborne pathogens and overall soil health.

The event fee is $45 per person, and it will take place at the Pine Island Fire Department, located at 684 County Road 1. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and practical tips for your onion-growing practices in 2025.
