New York Wines are Ready for Spring Tastings

By Blake Jackson

A feature by Kathleen Willcox and Robin Shreeves highlights how New York wineries are welcoming the spring season with fresh wine releases and renewed excitement among winemakers and visitors. As warmer weather arrives, wineries are introducing wines that match the season, including crisp whites, rosés, and lighter red varieties. These wines pair well with mild temperatures and outdoor gatherings.

At Millbrook Vineyards and Winery, winemaker Ian Bearup highlights the popularity of rosé during spring. The winery, known for its Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc, continues to attract wine lovers with seasonal releases.

“My favorite Spring wine is almost always our rosé,” Bearup said. “It is usually one of our first to bottle, and it’s bursting with smells of the upcoming summer, like strawberries and flowers. Our previous rosé is sold out, so faithful customers are excited to greet this new release.”

Lakewood Vineyards also prepares for strong seasonal demand. The winery offers a wide range of wines and continues to draw attention for its rosé and other varieties.

“Even after 40 years of doing this, I still get excited about all of the wines,” said Chris Stamp. “springtime is synonymous with Cab Franc Rosé. I feel like everyone in our tasting room gets really excited about the release, and that excitement rubs off on our visitors. The passion is infectious.”

White wines and sparkling options are also in focus. At The Lenz Winery, the release of Sauvignon Blanc and sparkling wines marks the arrival of warmer weather.

“These wines are always a good welcome to the warmer weather, and it’s always exciting to have the first wines from such a beautiful vintage to finally hit the shelves for everyone to experience,” Spotteck said.

Red wines remain part of the seasonal lineup as well. Arrowhead Spring Vineyards continues to offer aged red wines prepared over several years.

“Our reds are aged for two years in barrel, which is labor intensive, with all of the topping and racking required,” Ross said.

Wineries are also planning events, tastings, and outdoor experiences as visitor interest grows. Spring creates new opportunities for wine lovers to explore New York wine regions and enjoy seasonal flavors.
